Roof Racks and Fuel Economy: The Hidden Cost of Leaving Them on Your Car

A roof rack can make a vehicle more useful for bicycles, skis, kayaks and luggage, but many racks stay attached long after the trip ends. Once installed, they become visually invisible to the owner while remaining fully exposed to the airflow. That makes an empty rack a good example of a small convenience that can create a recurring fuel cost.

Vehicle manufacturers invest heavily in aerodynamic design because drag becomes increasingly important as speed rises. Crossbars and rack hardware interrupt that airflow. Modern removable and low-profile systems can reduce the penalty compared with bulky older designs, but any external accessory can alter the vehicle’s aerodynamic profile.

The cost is easy to miss because there is no separate roof-rack charge on a fuel receipt. Instead, the vehicle may simply achieve slightly worse economy on every highway trip. A small percentage difference repeated across thousands of miles can eventually exceed the effort required to remove and reinstall the rack when needed.

The effect depends on rack design, vehicle shape and speed. Highway drivers generally have more to gain from removing unused exterior equipment because aerodynamic drag matters more at higher speeds.

If your rack is removable and you use it only occasionally, consider taking off the crossbars between trips. Some vehicles have fixed rails with detachable crossbars, making this relatively easy. Follow manufacturer instructions so mounting points and seals are handled correctly.

If you use the rack every week, repeated removal may not be worth the inconvenience. Instead, choose aerodynamic crossbars, minimize unnecessary attachments and remove bike carriers or other hardware when not in use.

Suppose a vehicle normally achieves 30 mpg over 10,000 annual highway miles. It would use about 333 gallons. If an accessory reduced economy by 3%, effective economy would be about 29.1 mpg, requiring roughly 344 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the difference is around $38 per year. A larger aerodynamic penalty or higher mileage increases the cost.

That example is illustrative; real rack effects vary significantly. FuelEconomy.gov and energy agencies publish guidance on external cargo and aerodynamic drag, while rack manufacturers provide installation and removal instructions.

There is also a noise signal. Increased wind noise after installing crossbars does not directly measure fuel consumption, but it is a reminder that the accessory is interacting with airflow rather than disappearing aerodynamically.

When buying a rack, include efficiency in the product decision. Two systems that carry the same equipment may differ in frontal area, crossbar shape and how easily they can be removed. The cheapest rack upfront is not necessarily the cheapest over years of highway use.

Also distinguish fixed roof rails from added crossbars and carriers. Factory rails integrated along the roofline may have a much smaller aerodynamic effect than crossbars spanning the vehicle or bulky attachments mounted above them. Remove the pieces you do not need rather than assuming the entire system must stay or go.
