Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano disrupted air travel on September 6 after volcanic ash spread into airspace used by major airports. Reuters reported that six airports suspended operations, including Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta’s main international gateway. Airport operator Angkasa Pura said 301 flights were affected, including 58 international services.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, citing the country’s volcanology agency PVMBG, said Anak Krakatau experienced a continuous eruption episode lasting about 25 hours. Instrumental monitoring recorded the episode beginning at 11:07 p.m. local time on September 4 and ending at 12:04 a.m. on September 6. Even after the continuous eruption stopped, the volcano remained at Level III, or Siaga, meaning heightened activity and continuing restrictions.
