500 vs 1,000 Subscribers: YouTube Now Has Two Very Different Monetization Milestones

“How many subscribers do I need to monetize on YouTube?” no longer has one simple answer. YouTube effectively has two important milestones: an earlier-access tier beginning at 500 subscribers and the full ads-and-Premium entry tier at 1,000 subscribers.

01 Event

YouTube’s monetization system separates earlier-access features from full advertising and YouTube Premium revenue sharing.

02 What Changed?

The 500-subscriber tier remains available in eligible markets with three public uploads in the previous 90 days plus either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the previous year or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.

Starting February 1, 2027, new applicants seeking full ads and Premium revenue sharing still need 1,000 subscribers, but the viewing requirement rises to either 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million qualified Shorts views.

03 Why It Matters

A creator can legitimately reach a YouTube monetization milestone at 500 subscribers without unlocking every revenue feature. Likewise, reaching 1,000 subscribers alone does not mean full YPP ad eligibility is complete.

The viewing side becomes the much larger gap between the two milestones.

04 What It Means for You

Think of YouTube monetization as two doors. The first unlocks selected fan-funding and Shopping features. The second unlocks ads and Premium revenue sharing.

05 Numbers + Context

  • Earlier-access subscribers: 500.
  • Earlier-access long-form threshold: 3,000 qualified watch hours.
  • Earlier-access Shorts threshold: 3 million qualified Shorts views.
  • Full-revenue subscribers: 1,000.
  • 2027 full-revenue long-form threshold: 8,000 qualified watch hours.
  • 2027 full-revenue Shorts threshold: 20 million qualified Shorts views.

For long-form creators, the distance between the two viewing thresholds is 5,000 additional qualified watch hours. For Shorts creators, it is 17 million additional qualified views.

06 Earnyx Takeaway

Subscriber count is only one part of YouTube monetization.

The better way to plan is to track subscribers, qualified watch time, and qualified Shorts views as separate metrics. A smaller channel with strong engagement can sometimes be closer to monetization than a larger channel with weak viewing activity.
