Because internal storage is often impossible to expand later, buyers face an awkward decision: pay more now for capacity they may never use, or choose less and risk managing a nearly full phone for years.

Storage needs have grown as cameras capture larger photos and higher-resolution video, games become bigger, and users download more media for offline use. At the same time, cloud photo libraries, streaming services and online file storage can reduce how much data must permanently live on the device. The right capacity therefore depends less on a universal recommendation and more on how you use the phone.

Unused storage has no resale refund. If an upgrade from 256GB to 512GB costs $150 and you finish ownership using only 180GB, much of that premium bought capacity that never delivered value. Use the storage-management screen on your current device as your primary reference. Manufacturer specification pages can confirm available capacities, while cloud-service pricing should be included if your strategy depends on paid online storage.
Also compare the storage premium with the cost of alternatives over your expected ownership period. Paying $120 more once for additional local storage may be cheaper than several years of a larger cloud plan, but cloud storage can serve multiple devices and provide backup benefits that internal capacity cannot. These are not identical products, so compare both cost and function.
Resale matters only modestly here. Higher-capacity models can sell for more later, but buyers rarely recover the entire original storage premium. Treat resale as a partial offset, not a reason to overbuy.
