AI Image Generators in 2026: Midjourney, Firefly and ChatGPT Compared by Cost

01 Event

AI image tools can look interchangeable until you compare how they actually charge. Midjourney sells GPU time and subscription tiers. Adobe Firefly combines subscription access with generative credits. ChatGPT bundles image creation into a broader general-purpose AI plan.

That means there is no honest “cheapest AI image generator” without defining the workload. A user making ten concept images per month faces a different cost equation from a designer producing hundreds of variations for client work.

This comparison uses current official plan information as of September 2026 and focuses on pricing structure, not subjective claims that one model always produces “better” images.

02 What Changed?

Midjourney currently offers four individual plans. Its official comparison page lists Basic at $10 per month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 and Mega at $120. The included Fast GPU time rises from 3.3 hours on Basic to 15, 30 and 60 hours respectively. Midjourney also states that Standard, Pro and Mega include unlimited image generations in Relax Mode, while Stealth Mode is limited to Pro and Mega.

Adobe Firefly’s current U.S. individual plans are structured differently. Firefly Standard is $9.99 per month, Pro $19.99, Pro Plus $49.99 and Premium $199.99. Adobe lists 2,000 generative credits on Standard, 4,000 on Pro, 10,000 on Pro Plus and 50,000 on Premium. Adobe also states that paid plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations, with credits used for premium features such as video, audio and partner-model outputs.

ChatGPT Plus is currently $20 per month according to OpenAI’s help center. OpenAI’s current pricing page says Plus includes more complex and accurate image creation than lower tiers, but it does not publish a simple “X images per month” allowance that can be compared directly with Midjourney GPU hours or Firefly credits.

03 Why It Matters

The pricing unit changes how you should evaluate the tool.

For Midjourney, the question is how much fast-generation time you need and whether Relax Mode is acceptable for your workflow. For Firefly, standard image generation may be effectively uncapped on a paid plan while premium features consume credits. For ChatGPT, image creation is one feature inside a larger subscription that may also be paying for research, reasoning, file analysis and other work.

A fair calculation is:

Effective image cost = monthly subscription cost ÷ number of finished images you actually use

Do not divide by the number of generations. If you generate 100 images but keep only 10, the useful-output cost is based on those 10.

This is especially important for creators already paying for several AI products. Earnyx’s AI subscription-overload analysis shows why overlapping $10-$30 subscriptions can quietly become a much larger monthly expense.

04 What It Means for You

Choose the billing model that matches how you work:

  • Occasional creator: Start with free access or the lowest paid tier and measure how often you actually export a finished image.
  • High-volume ideation: Unlimited or relaxed generation modes can matter more than a small price difference.
  • Commercial design workflow: Check privacy, collaboration, editing integrations and commercial-use terms in addition to generation cost.
  • Multi-purpose AI user: A general subscription can be better value if the same plan already covers writing, research, analysis and image generation.
  • Client-confidential work: Verify whether generations are public by default and whether private-generation controls require a higher plan.

Also compare the image tool with your current design software. Paying for a separate generator may be unnecessary if your existing creative suite already includes the functions you need.

05 Numbers + Context

Tool Current paid entry point How usage is measured Important current limit/benefit
Midjourney $10/month Basic Fast GPU time + Relax Mode on higher tiers Standard and above include unlimited image generation in Relax Mode
Adobe Firefly $9.99/month Standard Generative credits for premium features Paid plans include unlimited standard image/vector generations
ChatGPT Plus $20/month Plan usage limits rather than a fixed public image-credit count Image creation is bundled with broader ChatGPT tools

Midjourney’s annual plans are listed at a 20% discount versus monthly billing, but annual commitment only saves money if you keep using the service. See Earnyx’s annual-billing reality check before treating the annual price as automatically cheaper.

Adobe’s plan design also shows why image-only users should not judge Firefly by raw credit totals. Adobe says standard image generation does not consume the paid-plan allowance in the same way premium generation does.

06 Earnyx Takeaway

The cheapest plan on paper is not automatically the cheapest workflow.

Midjourney is priced around GPU access and generation mode. Firefly separates standard image generation from premium credit use. ChatGPT bundles image creation into a much broader AI subscription. Those are three different economic models.

Choose based on how many finished images you need, how quickly you need them, whether privacy matters, and whether the subscription replaces other tools you already pay for. The useful metric is cost per image you actually keep—not cost per prompt.
